First U.S. Presidential Election

The First U.S. Presidential Election was held in 1861.  Although George Washington was given the position of President for as long as he wished to hold the office, there were more than a dozen contenders for Vice President.  John Adams received the majority of the electoral votes for the office of Vice President.
